Learn How to Stop Procrastinating

Procrastinating is a bad behavioral habit, just like overeating and smoking. And just like people with those vices, a chronic procrastinator needs help overcoming it. To start the process of ending procrastination, a person must identify the cause of the habit. And two of the biggest causes are disorganization and low self esteem.  For some people, being disorganized means more than just spending wasted time searching for items.  To them, being disorganized leads to fear of not being able to complete a task. The task looks too big to complete in a timely fashion, because who knows how much time it will take with the mess they have. This leads to procrastination, which means total shutdown. Obviously, these people need some time management skills and organizational training. And while seeking help for this, they should go ahead and seek help for low self esteem.

 Once these individuals become organized, they will often fall into the trap of low self esteem. Now they view themselves as not having the proper skills to complete a task. Or they feel the task is very important, and they cannot do the job well enough. Here again, some outside help that will reinforce their abilities is needed. Seldom will they overcome this mental barrier by themselves. They need to learn some thought exercises that will jump start them into getting on with the task.

 We have all procrastinated at one time or another, so we know how people can fall into this habit. Once the fear of being so disorganized that they cannot start a task has sunk in, or their self esteem has dropped so low as to prevent them from taking on a task, then outside help is highly recommended.
